beginning
I don’t want there to be a beginning because then there has to be an end.
But today is a beginning: it is the first day of the Carleton College new media off-campus study program in which I am a student. The program is ten weeks long and travels to New York, London, Amsterdam, and Berlin. Today my classmates and I arrive in New York to begin the program. Check out our group blog.
I have two goals I’d like to achieve during the next ten weeks: to consume and to create.
Consumption: I want to consume art. I want to meet artists so I can consume their visions of the world. I want to see the physical world as an artistic medium rather than as a source of inspiration. I want to notice aesthetics. Then I want to internalize all that I experience.
Creation: I want to create the world in which I live as I live in it. I want to live like Harold does in Crockett Johnson’s Harold and the Purple Crayon. I want to create art and then live inside of that art.
I feel like an artist now. Does that make me an artist?
